Sony Labels Unlicensed PS3 Controllers As Potentially Dangerous

Company's latest firmware update does not support knock-off controllers, could make them explode.

Sony's most recent software update for the PlayStation 3 brings 3D movies to the console, and as some gamers are discovering, it's also bricking unlicensed third-party controllers. And be warned, Sony states in a consumer alert, those now useless controllers could become explosive.

Sony's software update launched on Tuesday. On the same day the company released the little-noticed consumer alert that labeled "counterfeit" PS3 controllers as potentially dangerous.

"It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, or other property," Sony stated.

"Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates."

Sony recommends gamers use only first-party PS3 controllers and went on to state it is not liable for any losses or damages gamers might experience should a counterfeit controller explode.
