Florida Grandmother Arrested For Attempting To Sell Her Grandson

A Florida grandmother and her boyfriend were in jail Monday after trying to sell the woman's 8-week-old grandson for $30,000, police said.

Patty Bigbee, 45, and her boyfriend, Lawrence Works, 42, were arrested and charged last week.

Bigbee is accused of having approached a potential buyer in late October, offering to sell the infant for $75,000, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) said in a statement.

The would-be-buyer then contacted authorities.

Together, they negotiated the price of the baby down to $30,000 and agreed to meet, the statement said. Bigbee and her boyfriend arranged the sale for Friday, at which point officers swept in.

"Our agents were there to safely recover the child and to take the two individuals involved into custody," said Heather Smith, a spokeswoman for the FDLE.

The infant was turned over to the Department of Children and Families. His mother is incarcerated on unrelated charges.

Bigbee's bail was set at $100,000, while Works' was put at $50,000, Smith said. Both are in the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach, Florida.
